With Snow Leopard, the Mac has a built-in support for the latest version of Microsoft Exchange Server. This article will guide you through Mail.app setup to work with your Exchange 2007 or Exchange 2010 mailbox. Please note, MacMail on Snow Leopard OS doesn't support Exchange 2003 mailboxes.

MacMail Setup:

  1. Starting from the Mac Desktop, clink on the Macintosh HD Icon.
  2. Select the Mail.app
  3. Click on the Mail button at the top of the screen and got to Preferences.

  4. On the Preferences page select Accounts at the top of the page.
  5. On the Accounts page click the “+” in the bottom left of the window. It will open Add Account window.

  6. On the Add Account page fill in the following:
    • Full Name:  Users name as you want it displayed on emails.
    • Email address: Primary email address of the user.
    • Password: Mailbox password
Please Note: At this point if there is an Autodiscover record for the domain of the email address being set up skip toAccount Summary #2.  If not then continue on below for instructions on connecting to the server manually.
If you would like to set up an Autodiscover record for your domain please see the Autodiscover KB article.
  7. Hit Continue.
  8. On the Incoming Mail Server page fill in the following:

    • Account Type: click on the arrows next to where it says POP and then select Exchange 2007.
    • Description: This is Optional and does not matter what is put here.
    • Incoming Mail Server: This can be found by logging into 4Smartest and going to Get Started > Advanced Settings
Or by having the user log into Mailbox Manager. On the bottom right of the screen is the Internet Mail Settings, click on this, then the link for how to configure Microsoft Outlook Express. Step 7 will have the Incoming Mail server.
    • User Name: Please see instructions on how to find the username in the article What is my User Name and Primary Email Address for my Exchange 2007 mailbox?
    • Password: This is the mailbox password.
    • Also set up: Make sure both Address Book Contacts and iCal calendars are selected to have these sync to the Exchange server.
  9. Click Continue and it will take you to the Account Summary page.

    Account Summary #1:
If you used the Manual set up instructions listed above the Account Summary page should look like this:

Have the box for Take account online checked to connect to the server as soon as the Create Button is hit.
Please note: Both the Incoming Mail Server and the Outgoing Mail Server will have the same address. This is correct.

    Account Summary #2:
If your domain has an Autodiscover record then the Account Summary page should look like this:

Also set up: Make sure both Address Book Contacts and iCal calendars are selected to have these sync to the Exchange server.  Hit the Create button to continue

Once you have hit the Create button using either method you will be brought to the screen shown below.  This screen will show the basic information about the account that was just created.  At this point the account has been created and is ready for use.

Please Note: You do not need to enter anything in the field for External Server.

 Exchange account access:

Unlike Entourage or Outlook Use of the MacMail connection to our Exchange servers requires the use of three separate applications to handle Email, Contacts and Calendar.  The three programs are the following.

  • Email: MacMail
  • Contacts: Address Book contacts
  • Calendar: iCal
